Major Reserach Areas • 1977-83: Studied a part of Central Himalaya for its forest vegetation. Applied aerial photo analysis and ordination tech¬niques to determine the structure and composition of forest communities. Obtained Ph.D. degree in 1982. Started post-doctoral work in hill agroforestry systems and eco-developmental studies. • 1983-86: Conducted different studies on phytosociology of Central Himalayan forests. This includes the assessment of high altitude blue pine forest vegetation on the basis of composition and structure/function. Under the eco-development programme various developmental activities like plantations on farmer’s land, socio-economic survey, etc., were conducted under my lead¬ership. Further, also studied the energetic of hill agro-forest¬ry system. • 1986-onwards: 1. Introduction and evaluation of different tree species for arid and semi-arid regions of India. (Long term ……. continuing) 2. Development of suitable agro-forestry systems for arid regions (studyied compatibility of different woody species with arid zone crops/grasses and above ground and below ground interactions in two tier/three tier systems, especially important for arid and semi arid regions of Rajasthan). (1988-1995). 3. Development of suitable planting technique for different land forms (sand dune afforestation, shallow soils, rocky sites and saline soils). (Long term ……. continuing) 4. Development of suitable design for shelterbelt and wind breaks to reduce the wind velocity and to check soil erosion in arid region (1990-1999). 5. Programme Leader of Under-utilized and Under-exploited Plants Project. Crops under study were; Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) and Euphorbia antisyphelitica (Thor). (1986-1991). 6. Programme Leader of project entitled, "Silvical studies on some well adapted arid zone tree species" (1989 -1998). 7. Co-Principal Investigator of Indo-US project on "Prosopis species for bio-fuel and pod production for arid, semi-arid and saline soils of India". Under the project the results obtained were very much encouraging and broke many barriers in the field of management and utilization of various exotic Prosopis species, especially in context of arid environment. Standardized technique of cleft grafting of non-thorny exotic Prosopis spp. on local thorny Prosopis juliflora. (1991-1998). 8. Co-Principal Investigator in ICAR sponsored project on nursery technology. (1993-1996). 9. Involved in aerial seeding activity for developing rangelands on large-scale basis in extreme arid parts of western Rajasthan during 1992, 1993 and 1994. 10. Co-Principal Investigator in Deptt. of wasteland, Govt. of India sponsored project entitled “Standardization of vegetative propagation of Simmondsia chinensis".(1994-2000). 11. Worked as Co-Principal Investigator in Forest/plantation hydrology related studies under the project “Water yield, moisture conservation and soil erosion from different types of catchments". (1992-1998). 12. Project – Prosopis state of knowledge: Worked in an international scientists’ team to develop a monograph for professionals and a practical manual for users of Prosopis juliflora/pallida –complex and conducted trainings on management and utilization aspects of P. juliflora at various states of India for officials of State Forest Depts. Scientist officials of state Agriculture Depts., State officials of various developmental agencies, NGOs, farmers, etc. (This team includes 2 Scientists from UK, One from Argentina, One from Peru and One from Mexico besides two scientists from India, including myself). (1998-2002). 13. Project Leader - “Assessment of structure and production function of extensive agroforestry systems of arid western Rajasthan”. (2000-continuing). 14. Project Leader - “Relative field performance of tree seedlings raised through advance nursery technique and traditional method”. (2000-2005). 15. Co-Principal Investigator in the project “Quantification of different Agroforestry models for productivity and soil ameliorating traits (2000-2005). 16. Co-Principal Investigator in NATP project on management of arid watershed.(1999-2005). 17. Co-Principal Investigator in the project “Development of Ailanthus excelsa based agri-silvi-pastoral system of arid tract”. 18. Co-Principal Investigator in the project “Development of suitable silvipastoral systems in rocky-stony rangelands of arid regions”. Visit Abroad • Invited as guest speaker to address ACOTANK-2001 (9th Australasian Conference on Tree Nut Crops) by Tree Crops Centre, Perth, Western, Australia. Participated in the conference and addressed the plenary session on “Indian experience of plantation forestry in arid regions of India”. Also presented papers in two mini-ACOTANK, one on Prosopis juliflora utilization and other on performance of Neem in arid tract of India – R&D strategies (13th – 19th, April, 2000). • Invited by IPALA
