CENTRAL ARID ZONE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

CAZRI is a premiere research institute of its own kind that was established in October 1959 by Government of India on the recommendations of a UNESCO Expert, Dr. C.S. Christian of CSIRO, Australia, to promote sustainable development of the Indian arid zone. The Institute is an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System of India under Indian Council of Agricultural Research, DARE, Govt. of India. During fifty years of its existence CAZRI has provided a better understanding of the arid
environment and its resources, and has released several doable technologies that have influenced the land use and livelihood options and has improved the overall productivity of this fragile agro-climatic region. Located at Jodhpur in the Thar Desert, CAZRI has been at the forefront of mobilizing scientific, technical and policy-related expertise to improve the livelihood and living conditions of the desert dwellers, with a focus on environmental sustainability. Since Thar Desert has some of the highest population densities in the global arid areas, CAZRI’s work lies at the center of the people- environment nexus.
